Q.1  Can I work in a convenience store and sell cigarettes if I am only 16?
A1.

Yes. The Smoke-free Ontario Act (SFO Act) does not require you to be 19 to sell tobacco. However, you must ask all tobacco customers who look under 25 for ID to prove they are 19 years of age or older.

Q.2   What happens if I am under 16 and have been charged with smoking on school property?
A2. The courts must deal with the offence. You and your parents or guardian will be issued a summons to appear in youth court at a specific time, date and location.

Q.3  Why is it against the law for teens to smoke on school property?

A3.

The SFO Act applies to everyone, youth and adults alike. By making school property smoke-free, it sends the message that, smoking tobacco is a deadly habit. The SFO Act prohibits smoking and holding lit tobacco products anywhere on school property or in school buildings, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. .

Q.4  If someone gives me a cigarette, have I broken any law?

A4.

No. Possessing or having tobacco is not against the law. However, the person who gave you the cigarette has broken the law by supplying tobacco to someone under 19 and they can be charged. If you give that cigarette to someone who is under 19, you are then breaking the law. It is illegal to give even one cigarette to a person under 19.

Q.5  Isn't smoking sexy?

A5.

Most people consider bad breath, smelly hair, smelly clothes, yellow fingers and coughing to be unattractive. The tobacco industry spends millions of dollars on advertising and marketing to convince you that smoking is cool, sexy and glamorous and sexy. Don’t be fooled..

Q.6  Doesn't smoking help you relax?

A6.

No. No smoking is a stimulant and causes increased heart rate and blood pressure. Feelings of stress and nervousness come from addiction to nicotine and smokers relieve this by increasing nicotine blood levels with their next cigarette..

Q.7   Isn't smokeless tobacco safer to use than cigarettes?

A7.

No.
There is no safe form of tobacco. Smokeless tobacco can cause pancreatic cancer, leukoplakia (white sores in the mouth that can progress to cancer), receding gums (gums that slowly shrink away from the teeth exposing teeth to decay) and addiction to nicotine. Smokeless tobacco users are 50 times more likely to get oral cancer than non-users.
